Frustrated with my gourds
Really don't know why my sponge gourds do not flower and grow fruit. Actually, they did pop up some female flowers last week, but those females turned yellow and withered very quickly unable to blossom. Checking on the internet, I found there are a bunch of sayings on this sad phenomenon. Some says it is due to inadquate sunlight -- there are monsoon rains in the afternoon occassionally in this area; while others say it is due to the number of vines and leaves -- rampant vines and leaves may contest for nutrition leading to failure of flowering and fruiting. There is even another saying that it is due to infesting fruit flies, which bite the budding female flowers to death.
I feel quite frustrated with those gourds, for I have been hoping to enjoy them in my dinner plates ever since I grew them in April.
Probably, I chose wrong species, which should have been farmed in fall, rather than in such a spring.
